Average Attendance: 50 participants, 20ish volunteers, 2 half-time staff, 2 part-time staff. 

4:30 pm:

Program Director, Kathleen Greiwe, and Program Assistant, Breanna Struss come

early to set up, which involves:

  • Putting up Compass Signage 
  • Setting up the Check-in Counter 
  • Setting up the Information Center
  • Unlocking all classroom doors 
  • Opening up the Equipment Closet 
  • Opening up the Compass Resource Closet 
  • Rolling Out the Resource Shelves
  • Getting snacks ready - (Every child has a chance to work on their academic skills, have a snack, and get some exercise.)

5:00 pm:

The bus leaves to pick up participants and often makes two trips in order to pick up everyone. 

Not many organizations of our kind are able to offer transportation, and it makes such a difference for those who would not otherwise be able to come. 

5:15 pm:

Volunteers arrive for the volunteer meeting, including announcements, follow up on weekly volunteer email, and prayer. In our weekly volunteer emails, Kathleen is now using short videos to share tutoring and resource tips.

5:20 pm:

Participants start to arrive.

  • Time for a little visiting
  • Everyone gets settled into their classes, which are:
    • Young participants - Childcare, Pre - K, K - 2nd, 3rd - 5th, and Youth
    • Adult participants - Beginning English Learners’ Class, Emerging English Learners’ Class, Developing & Expanding English Learners’ Class, and Citizenship Coaching

(Methods, techniques, curriculum and resources are continuously being reviewed

and improved.)

  • Staff walks around visiting rooms to
    • ensure safety
    • touch base with individual participants for this or that
    • redistribute volunteers, if need be
    • make sure that everyone has what they need

7:00 pm

  • Adult classes finish
  • Parents pick up children using a tag system 
  • Visiting in the “Hub” - the main area near the door
  • The van takes participants home
  • Staff and volunteers pack up and roll everything back to the resource closet
  • Doors are closed and locked
  • Lights are turned off, and another program night comes to a close
